Local artists The Beast, Apple Juice Kid, and Kooley High join Movement of Youth to educate students about Hip-Hop at Durham's Hayti
Movement of Youth, Inc. presents the fourth annual Hip-Hip Symposium. On Saturday, February 27th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., high school students will gather at the Hayti Heritage Center in Durham to learn about Hip-Hop music and culture. Guest panelists and presenters will include Kooley High, DJ D-Cutta, Apple Juice Kid and The Beast among others.
Last year’s symposium featured a keynote lecture from Grammy nominee Phonte Coleman (from the critically acclaimed groups, The Foreign Exchange and Little Brother). He shared his experiences in Hip-Hop, gave career advice to students, and performed. The students also heard music from The Beast, and had the opportunity to write and perform original lyrics developed in workshops with local artists.
This year the symposium will include a diverse roster of Hip-Hop artists birthed in the Triangle area. Kooley High is a confederation of emcees, producers and a deejay that began as a student organization on the campus of North Carolina State University. Another Raleigh native, DJ D-Cutta is the founder of Choppin Bloc Entertainment and an 88.1FM WNKC radio personality. Also joining the mix will be eight-time beat battle champion Apple Juice Kid, a producer and percussionist who has collaborated with such artists as Mos Def, Wale, Camp Lo and 9th Wonder. Rounding out the group of guests is Durham quartet The Beast, whose frontman Pierce Freelon teaches Hip-Hop courses at North Carolina Central University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Cost: MOY mentees/mentors FREE, Guests $10 in advance, $15 at the door
