Become a Mentee

become_a_menteeNinth-, Tenth-, and Eleventh-graders in the Durham Public Schools System can apply to the program. In order to be eligible for participation, students must possess a recommended GPA of 2.5 or above. Upon successful completion of an application process, students gain admission to the program. Our program is highly selective; In view of this fact, our participants represent some of the best and brightest students that Durham Public Schools has to offer.

Note: Movement of Youth prohibits discrimination in all its programs and activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability, and where applicable, sex, marital status, familial status, parental status, religion, sexual orientation, genetic information, political beliefs, reprisal, or because all or part of an individual's income is derived from any public assistance program.

The Movement of Youth program will provide selected students with:

  • Fun Saturday Academy and Community Outreach sessions during their sophomore, junior, and senior years in high school. These activities are fun and are built to challenge students in various ways intellectually, physically and socially.
  • A mentor at their starting year and concluding at the end of the senior year. UNC sophomores and juniors apply annually to become mentors and friends for high school students in the Movement of Youth program. These close relationships provide our students with access to a Carolina student scholar who offers knowledge about how to successfully apply to and excel in college.
  • During the junior year, a series of SAT-prep seminars, at minimal or no cost, that will help students prepare for and do well on the SAT.
  • During the senior year, a series of college-prep seminars that will focus on financial aid, college selection, course interests, campus life, and various other topics to help parents and students during the college application process.

This initiative will change and grow with your continual involvement. Beyond the satisfaction of successfully reaching the goals of the program, this experience will reflect strongly in your college career and life endeavors.

Movement of Youth requires a non-refundable $25 USD application fee, payable by check or credit card. This fee is due upon submission of the application. This application fee will be applied to the annual participation fee of $50. On rare occasions, and on a case-by-case basis, we may choose to waive the application fee. Inquiries stating circumstances surrounding a fee waiver request should be directed to Eric Campbell at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Applicants will be notified via e-mail about their application status. Accepted students must respond via e-mail within two weeks of notification to confirm admission into the program in order to complete the process.
