Our History

atrayusSeeing such a need to address the educational and social needs of underrepresented populations, Atrayus Goode founded Movement of Youth in 2006 as a junior at UNC-Chapel Hill. Movement of Youth was based off a similar program that Atrayus completed during middle- and high-school sponsored by the Greater Charlotte Chapter of the 100 Black Men of America. Upon Atrayus' graduation from high-school, the 100 awarded him a full scholarship to attend college. While attending UNC, Atrayus formed Movement of Youth as a way to give back to those that helped him be successful.

Movement of Youth began targeting 11 minority male high school students from Hillside High School in Durham, North Carolina. Students from Hillside High School represented a critical group because it was a school that had not performed as well as other schools in the district, although it was receiving a great deal of attention and support from the district, including Durham Public Schools bringing in instructors from North Carolina Central University to teach. At the time, Hillside was under state court supervision for mandated improvement.

Because of its success at Hillside High School, Movement of Youth expanded to include females and target students from Hillside New Tech High School. New Tech opened in 2007 and creates a 21st century learning environment that will ensure that every student achieves at high levels as measured by local, state, and national standards and be prepared for any post-secondary endeavor.

In 2008, Movement of Youth was formally incorporated, established a formal Board of Directors, and received 501 (c) (3) tax exemption status. With new resources and leadership, Movement of Youth has been consistenly focused on expansion with the goal of targeting students throughout North Carolina and beyond.

At the present, Movement of Youth includes over 40 college mentors from UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University and over 50 students from six different high schools in the Durham Public Schools System. Movement of Youth celebrated the graduation of its first class of students in April of 2009, all of whom have gone on to pursue post-secondary education.
